Sudoku with colors
In a color sudoku, the squares hold colored circles: 🔴 red, 🔵 blue, 🟡 yellow and 🟢 green in the 4×4; the 6×6 adds 🟣 purple and 🟠 orange, and the 9×9 also has 🟤 brown, ⚫ black and ⚪ white. The 9×9 is available online; the printable worksheets come in 4×4 and 6×6.
The rule stays the same: each color appears exactly once in every row, every column and every box. Along the way, kids say the color names out loud – “Blue is still missing here!”
On paper: color it in
Printed out, the color sudoku becomes a coloring page: instead of drawing a picture, the child colors each empty square in the right color. That works even before children can copy pictures or write numbers.
- Use a color printer: in black and white, all the circles turn gray and can’t be told apart.
- Lay out matching crayons: only the colors from the key at the bottom of the sheet – that avoids mix-ups.
- Answers to compare: the last page has the answers, with the given squares shaded gray.
If colors are hard to tell apart
Some children find it hard to tell red and green apart. For them, a sudoku that relies only on colors is not a good choice. The picture sudoku with animals or shapes – where the symbols differ in form – or the letter sudoku work better.
