How a 6×6 sudoku works
A 6×6 sudoku has 36 squares and six different symbols. Its boxes are 2 squares high and 3 squares wide – that is the big difference from the square boxes of the 4×4. The rule stays the same: each symbol appears exactly once in every row, every column and every box.
How many squares are given depends on the difficulty: 18 to 22 on “Easy”, 14 to 17 on “Medium” and 10 to 13 on “Hard”.
Who is the 6×6 sudoku for?
The 6×6 is a great fit for kids from about age 6 and for anyone who already solves the 4×4 sudoku with ease. It needs a bit more stamina and overview, but it is far less to take in than a classic 9×9 sudoku. Tips for making the switch are in sudoku for 6-year-olds; for “Medium” and “Hard”, see sudoku for 7-year-olds.
Solving trick: where can it go?
Pick a symbol that already appears a lot – the fox, for example. Then go box by box: which box is still missing a fox? Rule out every row and column that already has one. If only one square is left in that box, the fox belongs there. With this “where can it go?” trick, kids can crack even hard 6×6 puzzles.
